1/4/09 - Introductory Teleconference of ALumni Association

_____________________________________________________

Attendees

 - Kevin Till, John Gezelius, Josh Hodny, Ron Sitzer and Jake Kryda.  We were spread from Southern California to Indiana!

 - Ron Sitzer spoke with Dave Hillsland and Jim Schnack prior to the meeting and they both asked to be copied on the minutes but were busy with prior obligations and could not attend.  Pat Thibert was not able to be reached.

 - Kevin Till spoke with Nate Kenner prior to the meeting and he was going to try to call in.

EZ Reader

 - We reviewed the below text for the upcoming winter EZ REader article on the AA and decided to make another pass at it to communicate more of the 'fun stuff' that the AA will entail.  This will include but not be limited to Homecoming events, PFD, Ritual events, golf events, formals, random social gatherings, etc.  We will also include the possibility of the AA members functioning in career mentoring roles where desired by the undergraduates.  Kevin will modify the article (action: Kevin) and email it to the everyone for their review (action: all).

 - Article will also include some survey-like questions for the alumni to consider as well as a link to a new webpage on the AA website where an AA survey will be created and placed (action: Kevin).  The goal is to learn what fun things Alumni woul dlike to see more of and also to see how others are willing to help out.

 - Jake will take the EZ Reader file and make the remaining undergrad additions (action: Jake) to it which will include an article on the upcoming PFD formal and Spring Alumni Ritual events and an article on Bill Marcil's UND Honorary Doctorate and graduation speech as well as (at the undergrads discretion) an article on the recent initiates' ritual experience recap and Dave Root's senior thoughts article. EZ Reader needs to go out ASAP!!!

Events

 - There will be no Alumni hockey event this spring.  It was previously decided that an every-other year basis was better.  Planning for 2010's event will need to begin October of this year.

 - PFD date is set but Jake did not have readily available. Undergrads need to follow-up on this (action: Jake).

 - Spring ritual event date is set but Jake did not have readily available. Undergrads need to follow-up on this (action: Jake).

 - We want to continue and build upon (make into a tradition) last August's 1st August Alumni event that coincided with the weekend before school started when all the undergrads were back and working on physical tasks and recruitment.  Planning to start late spring, date needs to be set before undergrads leave for summer break (action: all).

 - Josh suggested that we consider simultaneous/remote events so that non-local alumni could participate in events as well.  For instance, golf tournies, march madness, etc.  No specific action or event was given a go-ahead at this time, but this will be considered by the group for future events.

Alumni Funded Scholarship Fund

 - Josh is still seeking legal advice on setting up the non-profit org, etc.

 - Ron Sitzer suggested Josh contact Jack Marcil via Dave Hillsland (action: Josh). Alternatively, Gerald Vandewalle, Al Olson and John Gezelius may be able to assist if needed.

 - It was discussed and the consensus was that this should also fund leadership training / general and conclave assembly travel, etc. for the undergrads as well.

 - John will be sending Jake to Indy in the next couple of weeks to see GHQ and will also assist Jake's attendance in future general fraternity events (action: John, Jake).

Alumni Recognition

 - John will be nominating Gerald Vandewalle and Al Olson for the Order of Merit (action: John).

 - Bill Marcil's UND Honorary Doctorate and graduation speech will be written about in the winter EZ Reader as mentioned above (action: Jake).

General

 - Next meeting will be February 8th at 8pm CST in light of the SuperBowl being during our normally scheduled date and time.  March we will go back to 1st Sunday of every month at 8pm CST.

 - John mentioned that being that undergrad membership was very low going into this fall and things are looking up on the undergrad level as well as the alumni levels, that if we are running as a well oiled machine by Fall 2011 we will have shown a huge change over 3 years and could perhaps win the general fraternity's Phoenix Award.  We hereby are making this a chapter goal (action: ALL).

Duration

7:55pm to 9:05pm CST

Further Discussions

Based on the database showing ~50 iving alumni residing in GF, James Schnack will start up a weekly meeting group with the hopes of getting local brothers together to socialize.  He is targeting Monday nights and will be utilizing Monday Night Football for some of the initial events.

One of the things that has really driven Jeff Nelson to become involved once again is witnessing our Fraternity's Ritual once again.  In furtherance of this, we will be planning an Alumni Ritual event for sometime in November.  This may or may not coincide with the active chapter's semesterly initiation depending on scheduling.  The initial goal for an Alumni turnout to such an event is 20 brothers.  Look for more to come on this in the near future.
